  1. An elm is any tree of the family Ulmaceae, 
  2. found in temperate regions of the northern 
  3. hemisphere and in mountainous parts of the 
  4. tropics. The common English elm Ulmus procera 
  5. is widely distributed throughout Europe. It 
  6. reaches 35m (115ft), with tufts of small, 
  7. purplish-brown flowers, which appear before 
  8. the leaves. Other species are the wych elm 
  9. Ulmacaceae glabra, indigenous to Britain, the 
  10. North American white elm Ulmacaeae americana, 
  11. and the red or slippery elm Ulmacaeae fulva.
